WBGFC Tournament Reports - 2010
The 33rd Whangaroa One Base Contest
How time flies – the Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club has been running
this One Base Contest for 33 years and it is as popular now as it
used to be, with 59 boats and 179 anglers this year fishing for
prizes and trophies.
Our major sponsors Kilwell Sports, Lion
Breweries and Advance Trident Ltd furnished us with prizes and lucky
draws along with a host of other generous sponsors.
This year the contest was held over 5 days, with day 1 sponsored by
Kilwell Sports, getting off to a slow but steady start with the fish
catches. There were 3 kingfish, 1 albacore and 4 striped marlin

with 37kg line from ‘Lady Eve’. This fish won Justin the prizes for
the fish with most IGFA points and the heaviest marlin which
included a game rod and reel, monofilament line, traces and a cooler
bag.
Day 2 was also sponsored by Kilwell Sports with more tackle, rods
and reels and other fishing goodies. Two snapper, 2 albacore and 5
striped marlin were caught, with the day’s biggest striped marlin at
125.4kg caught by Corin Stephen from the charter boat ‘Marlin Blue’.
This fish won Corin the same prizes as the biggest fish of day 1,
and was also a new pinfish for the club.
Each day 3 buoys were put out to sea to be
retrieved by the contestants and returned to the club for a prize.
Each buoy returned was worth vouchers from the Boaties Haven in
Waipapa. Among the lucky draw prizes, Billy Ebdale won the much
sought after Dulux can of jelly beans to be consumed on the boat
next day, supplied daily by Guthrie Bowron, and Stephen Lowe,
skipper of the commercial boat ‘Maggie J’ won an umbrella supplied
by Mark Crombie Holden.
Day 3 was Lion Breweries day with prizes ranging from Lion hats to
soft bait sets and Coruba RTDs. On this day 2 kingfish, 3 striped

on 24kg line. Who got the jelly beans – Mark Whiter on ‘Nevada’.
Day 4 was TICA-Kilwell day with several pairs of binoculars and
tracing gloves and gaffs and other prizes up for grabs, and grabbed
they were by several meritorious fish. The biggest fish of the day
was a blue marlin landed by Denise Larmer aboard ‘Liberator’ which
weighed in at 140.9kg and was wound in on 24kg line. Club committee
member Trish Ace used her skill and that of skipper Lawrie Franks
aboard ‘Lady Luck’, to play and land a striped marlin of 100.3kg on
15kg line. This took an hour of work and won Trish a daily prize and
a couple of trophies. It was a good day of fishing all in all, with

the money going towards the Calcutta prize for the heaviest striped

A Redwoods Winner
And we have a winner!!........ lucky Rebecca
Watson-Young of Whangaroa has won the jackpot in the Redwood’s
Dental Competition held by Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club and sponsored
by Redwoods Dental Centre of Waipapa.
Each year Michael and Helen Bain start off the jackpot and angler’s
entry fees are added to it, until someone catches the first marlin.
This year Rebecca went out fishing with uncle
Stu Sheard at the helm of Brett Mackay’s launch ‘Macksom’. Fishing
off Cape Brett with an orange and white Hawaiian Ghost lure, a
striped marlin took the lure and gave Rebecca a 55 minute fight on
24kg line. The fish weighed in at 104.2kg and won Rebecca the
Redwood’s Dental Trophy which Michael and Helen proudly awarded her.
The striped marlin was also the heaviest of this species so far to
be weighed in by a club member so she will also be awarded a silver
pin for her efforts.
Juniors Contest 2010
For once our junior and small-fry anglers had
good weather and sea conditions for their annual contest. 26 young
anglers aboard 13 boats were gently rocked by a smooth 2m swell and
their hair lightly ruffled by 10 knot variable winds.
The 2 day competition was for a variety of prizes from our generous
sponsors and in friendly competition with other young anglers of the
northern fishing clubs for a variety of trophies.
The budding anglers had a great time and managed to catch 7 snapper,
mako, blue and tope sharks, 2 kahawai and a striped marlin.
The marlin was the first by a club member and earned Kerikeri angler
Renee Larmer a silver pin. Renee was aboard the 7.2m ‘Liberator’
skippered by Brett Larmer when the marlin took a lure at the back of
Stephenson’s Island and after 70 minutes she landed a 100kg fish
using 24kg line, which happened to be her first marlin.
Small fry angler Baily McIntyre managed to land a 72.3kg mako on
10kg line after a 90 minute struggle. The shark took mullet bait
fished from granddad’s boat ‘Popgun’ at Stephenson’s Island, and may
be a new NZ Record.
Another shark was caught during the competition; a blue shark
estimated at 75kg was tagged and released by 14 year old Jacinta
Peryer of Totara North from the boat ‘Just Us’ skippered by Ken
Frear. The ‘Just Us’ team also managed to tag and release 2
yellowtail kingfish as well.
Cody Crayford of Whangaroa landed the biggest snapper of the season
so far, with a lovely fish weighing 8.26kg from ‘Masquerade’
skippered by Hori Ratcliffe.
Renee’s marlin catch won her the prize for the heaviest marlin; a
Tica Infinity rod c/w Sirocco SS4000 reel provided by Kilwell, a
free bill carving from Seamounts Ltd., and the club’s Whangamel
Perpetual Trophy. Baily’s shark was the heaviest and won him a Guy
Harvey towel and hat, and a cell phone given by Buildall Holdings of
Whangaroa, and the club’s Juniors Day Cup for the heaviest mako.
Cody’s splendid snapper won him a Tica Belc rod c/w a Spinfocus
GS6000 reel from Kilwell.
Two prizes were not won, but for the junior anglers all is not
lost!; these prizes have been held over until the end of the season
so that they have a chance to catch the heaviest tuna and yellowtail
kingfish to win Guy Harvey products at the close of the season at
the end of June. The results from the club’s contest go forward to
compete for the interclub trophies.
The club takes this opportunity to thank all the sponsors who
provided prizes: Kilwell, Ace Dress-Making, Bryce Sims Electrical,
Seamounts Ltd, St Paul’s Cannery, Buildall Holdings, Advance Trident
Ltd., Hori Ratcliffe’s Engineering Ltd., Al & Brenda Denholme for a
superb lucky draw prize, Sally at the Marina Café and the Kahlua II
team.
